Review: Just Desserts by Scarlet Blackwell

The pen is mightier than the cleaver…

French chef Luc Tessier is five-star successful. His cookery program on TV is rated as high as his restaurant, and casual flings are his specialty. The only stain on his toque is Daniel Sheridan, an English food critic who has made it his business to ruin Luc’s reputation.

The only way to clarify this particular pat of butter is to invite the critic to dine and bury the hatchet-preferably in Daniel’s back. The moment he lays eyes on Daniel, however, Luc’s thoughts turn from sauces to seduction.

Daniel definitely finds Luc appetizing, but he plays it cool. He never wants to be anyone’s toy, ever again. Yet in the face of Luc’s relentless pursuit, he’s finding it harder to keep the flamboyant chef at arm’s length.

A cooking competition on a remote Scottish island seems the perfect way to put some distance between them. Until Luc shows up to compete, determined to win not only the trophy, but Daniel’s heart…

The 3 reasons I love this book, by Monica:

1)      The chef’s name is Luc Tessier, which just happens to be one of my favorite characters from one of my favorite movies of all time, “French Kiss”.  Kevin Kline (who happens to share my birthday) plays Luc, a roguish French thief who manages to capture the heart of an American named Kate, played by Meg Ryan.  Oh how I love the French.  But I digress.

2)      I barely got 3 lines into the story before I succumbed to hearty laughter.  This is one of the funniest romances I’ve read in a long time.  The characters have a sharp, naughty wit that they use like master warriors.  The imagery that Luc paints while thinking about what he wants to do to Daniel left me speechless while giggling like a schoolgirl.

3)      Oh, and did I mention that the characters are HOT?  There are very rarely any plain Joes or Janes in romance novels (although I have read about a few in my long reading life).  This book is no exception.  An arrogant, skilled chef who just happens to be handsome and very thorough?  A sexy, well put-together critic, with violet eyes?  Yeah, you definitely got my attention.

Normally, novellas are quick on action and short on plot, but this one managed to fit a lot of background in with the romance.  The only downside was that I didn’t get to find out more about Daniel in terms of character development.  I learned a lot about Luc, and all of it was enjoyable.  These 2 guys are irresistible; your time will be well spent snuggling up to a good read with them.  You may never look at whipped cream and chocolate sauce the same way again. – Monica, www.ireadromance.com
